Mabel Bent Collection

Fourteen manuscript letters presented to the RGS by Gerald Brisch at the request of Captain John Beauchamp Blackett, a descendant of Mabel Bent's sister, Ethel Constance Mary Hall-Dare. The letters are addressed to Mabel Bent's family and are grouped by location. Four letters from 'Mashonaland', seven 'Abyssinian', three 'Arabian'. The collection also includes letters concerning the donation to the RGS and transcriptions by Gerald Brisch.

Born in Co. Meath, and raised in Co. Wexford, Mabel married James Theodore Bent (q.v.) in 1877. She accompanied her husband on his travels and took part in his excavations and collecting, later publishing an account of these with photographs after his death as Mrs Theodore Bent. Mabel donated a small collection of South Arabian items in 1926. Her diaries are an important source of contemporary information, and were used by Theodore as the basis of some of his written work....
